What to Expect at Your First Visit

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Here's exactly what the journey looks like — from the first phone call to weekly sessions — so you and your child know what's coming.

Step 1

The Free Phone Consult

It starts with a free 15-minute call. You tell Cheryl what you're noticing at home — the meltdowns, the messy handwriting, the mealtime standoffs, whatever brought you here. She'll listen, ask a few questions, and tell you honestly whether occupational therapy can help. If it can't, she'll point you toward what can. There's no pressure to book anything.

Step 2

Scheduling the Evaluation

If it feels like a fit, we'll find a time for the evaluation that works with your family's schedule. Because we're private-pay, there's no waitlist — most families are seen within days, not months. You'll get a quick intake form to fill out so Cheryl knows a bit about your child before you arrive.

Step 3

The Evaluation Day — Through Your Child's Eyes

To your child, it just feels like play. Cheryl has a room full of inviting things — swings, a crash pad, therapy putty, beads, blocks, games. She follows your child's lead, choosing activities that look like fun but quietly tell her a lot about motor skills, sensory responses, and problem-solving. There's no test to pass, no right or wrong answers. Most kids leave asking when they can come back.

Step 4

The Evaluation Day — Through Your Eyes

While your child plays, Cheryl is observing closely — how they move, how they respond to sensory input, how they approach a challenge. You're welcome to watch, and Cheryl will check in with you along the way. The evaluation lasts about 60 minutes. Before you leave, you'll sit down together to talk about what she saw.

Step 5

Reviewing the Results Together

In plain language — no jargon, no acronyms — Cheryl walks you through what she observed: your child's strengths, what's coming easily, and what's getting in the way. You'll see a clear plan of care with specific, meaningful goals, and you'll know exactly what therapy will focus on and why. You'll leave with real understanding and clear next steps.

Step 6

How Ongoing Sessions Work

Regular sessions are typically 45 minutes, once a week, in your home — where therapy can happen in your child's real environment. Cheryl brings all the equipment. Each session weaves the goals from your child's plan into playful activities, and you leave with one or two simple things to try at home during the week. You'll get weekly progress updates so you always know how things are moving.

How to Prepare

There's almost nothing to do. The evaluation is designed to be low-stress for your child and easy for you. A few small things help:

  • Comfortable clothes your child can move, climb, and get messy in
  • A snack and a drink, in case your child gets hungry
  • Any prior evaluations, school reports, or IFSP/IEP paperwork if you have them
  • Your questions and anything you've been noticing at home
  • No need to prep your child beyond "we're going somewhere fun to play" — there's nothing to study or practice
